There are three levels of Examiner within the British Judo Association
1) Examiner;
2) Provisional Senior Examiner; and
3) Senior Examiner.
The Requirements.
The Application, Appointment and The Revalidation for each of these levels is set out below.
EXAMINER Requirements
The minimum age requirement for an Examiner within the British Judo Association is 20 years. Those wishing to become an examiner must hold a British Judo Association competitive Dan Grade and have held this grade for a minimum of two years. Also they must either hold a current Referee's Certificate of BJA level or higher, or must have passed the BJA Referee Award (Theory Paper) within the last two years.
Before the candidate can be appointed as an Examiner, they must "sit‑in" at two examinations (which may be a junior or senior grading examination or one of each), and must then conduct two senior and two junior examinations under the supervision of an Examiner. The grading examinations must be undertaken to the satisfaction of the supervising examiner. Examiners eligible to supervise at such examinations will be nominated by the Area Director of Examiners but will normally be expected to have been an examiner for at least two years.
APPLICATION AND APPOINTMENT
On satisfactory completion application to become an Examiner should be made to the Director of Examiners for your Area. The address of Director of Examiners can be obtained from the Area Secretary. There are no additional requirements, but at the discretion of the Area, a small registration fee may be charged for appointment and revalidation of Examiners to cover administrative costs of the scheme. A card of authority will be issued by BJA Head Office and an “Examiner” Blazer Badge (cost of £5.00).
Appointment as an Examiner is a BJA appointment and any member who fulfils requirements is entitled to be appointed as an Examiner. If the Area Committee refuse to appoint an Examiner, then he or she has the right to appeal to the Board of Directors. Details of the process and an Appeals Form are available from the Director of Examiners for the respective area.
REVALIDATION
Examiners are required to revalidate every two years and the revalidation must be signed in the card by the Area Director of Examiners. To revalidate, an Examiner must:
a) Conduct a minimum of four examinations in the two year period sending satisfactorily completed examination sheets to Area Recorder.
b) Attend at least one of the "Annual Conferences for Examiners" (organised by the Area) in the two year period.
c) Attend at least one Referees Seminar within the two year period.
If an Examiner is unable to attend an Annual Conference for Examiners or a Refereeing Seminar within the two year period, and there are extenuating circumstances to explain his or her absence, he or she has the right of appeal to the Area Committee before losing status as an Examiner. If this appeal is rejected, then he or she has the right of appeal to the Board of Directors.
The Annual Conference for Examiners should be conducted by the Area Director of Examiners and used to introduce any changes ‑ e.g. in syllabus or in the Contest ‑ and to set a standard for grades awarded at examinations. Primarily it is also an opportunity for information exchange.
